The density of hardwood makes it ideal for decking, delivering incredible durability even in extreme weather conditions. It is exceedingly resistant to decay, warping, splitting, moisture, and insect attack. Hardwood features a natural shimmer, making it a very attractive alternative to other types of wood or synthetic decking. Pre-drilling is necessary for fastening. There are a variety of tropical hardwoods used in decking, each featuring different tones and/or variegated color.

Hardwood Decking Options

Ipe

Tigerwood

Tigerwood is generally a golden brown or reddish brown color with some darker variegated color. Featuring admirable strength, hardness, and durability, Tigerwood is a popular choice in decking. It is also known as Goncalo Alves.

Brazilian Teak

Brazilian Teak is generally a dark brown color. Sometimes it has reddish tones and/or darker variegated color. It features an interlocked grain and is also known as Cumaru.

Red Mahogany

Red Mahogany decking boards can be several types of wood species. It is named “Red Mahogany” because of its general resemblance to Mahogany. Featuring great hardness, rich color, and tight grain, it makes for a very attractive and elegant choice.

Maintenance & What to Expect

Hardwood decks never need water sealants, however they do require annual UV-protective oil applications if maintaining its original color is desired. It is also recommended to occasionally clean hardwood decks with a proper wood cleaner followed by thorough rinsing. Hardwood decks can be stained to achieve a desired color. Choosing to not treat hardwoods will ultimately lead to a grayish, rustic appearance.
